Actor Alec Baldwin got sober on February 23rd, 1985. He was 26 years old. Addiction runs in Baldwin’s family; his brother, Daniel Baldwin, has also spoken publicly about his substance use disorder.
When he was younger, Baldwin struggled with drinking and drug use. Soon before he stopped using substances, he nearly died of an overdose. He said of the time before he quit drinking and using drugs, “Those two years that I lived in that white, hot period, as a daily drug abuser, as a daily drinker…to my misery, boy, that was a tough time… There was really, really a lot of pain in there.”[1]
While Baldwin hasn’t spoken much publicly about his active addiction days, his recovery is important to him. “That’s a profound part of my life…giving up drinking and taking drugs so early on,” he said.[2] In 2017, he published a memoir, Nevertheless, in which he opens up about his past substance use.
Baldwin says that while he likely would have found recovery eventually, he is grateful to have gotten sober young. Three years into being sober, Baldwin got one of his first big breakout roles with Beetlejuice. Since then, he’s had a long and prolific career.
