Each year, the National Public Health Week brings people information about specific issues that affect their communities and individuals. The topics that the week will educate the public about depends on the most pressing issues of the day. Individuals can use the time to learn more about mental and physical health problems that they or loved ones might have, such as mental illness or addiction due to a heroin epidemic. Additionally, this public health awareness week is also the perfect time to talk to loved ones about getting care for a physical or mental health problem they may have. At TruHealing Centers, our team believes in the importance of raising awareness of public health issues during events such as National Public Health Week.
What Is National Public Health Week?
National Public Health Week is an official time when the American Public Health Association works with local groups to build awareness about health issues. On April 5th through 11th this year, events across the country will focus on a different theme each day of the week. By addressing these topics, National Public Health Week aims to bring action, science, and justice to issues of public health.
With better awareness of issues concerning public health, communities and their members can advocate for more equal access to quality care, healthier neighborhoods, and better wellness throughout the nation.
What Topics During National Public Health Week Will Be the Focus?
For 2021, the events for National Public Health Week will be entirely online. However, that does not stop organizers from working hard to promote the importance of the daily topics in the health of the country. This year’s themes each day are as follows:
- Rebuilding on Monday, April 5
- Promoting racial equality on Tuesday, April 6
- Strengthening and cultivating communities on Wednesday, April 7
- Spurring climate justice on Thursday, April 8
- Developing COVID-19 resilience on Friday, April 9
- Encouraging mental wellness and health on Saturday, April 10
- Uplifting essential workers and healthcare employees on Sunday, April 11
What Can You Do During National Public Health Week?
Despite events for the National Public Health Week occurring online this year, individuals can learn about the topics themselves during each day. Finding out more about these subjects could help spur conversation with others who may need help getting into a treatment program for mental health concerns or addiction recovery. Alternatively, people may identify problems in themselves that could prompt them to seek care.
For example, during the third day that focuses on building strong communities, individuals could learn about drug addiction in their areas and how it may affect those around them. A small step that people can do is to encourage loved ones with substance addiction to enter rehab for their problems. Therefore, the person with an addiction can make a change in their life while also playing a small role in reducing the number of people in the community with drug addiction.
During the next to last day of Public Health Week, individuals can find out more about mental health problems and the signs that they or someone else may need treatment.
On Tuesday, people can find out about how health care facilities promote racial justice. For example, TruHealing Centers provides $750,000 in social justice scholarships for its addiction recovery treatment programs.
