The rapper French Montana has been sober since November 2019. He got sober following a hospitalization a little over a week after his 35th birthday, when he collapsed from mixing Adderall, Percocet, and alcohol.
Montana says his life was out of control, but he was the only one in his orbit who didn’t notice. “It’s almost like working out,” he said. “You don’t see you getting big ‘cause you see yourself every day. It’s the same thing with you being out of control.”[1]
For many years, he was relying on pills to keep him on the move—the Adderall to keep him energized and the Percocet for pain relief. He attributes his hospitalization to a combination of pushing himself too hard—fatigue, dehydration—and alcohol and drug use.
“I was runnin’ for like a good 20 years without a break, and God put a stop to that,” he said.[2] After getting sober, he “detoxed from social media” for a year. He allowed himself a break to focus on his health—physical and mental.
The music industry has long been notorious for fostering or exacerbating addiction—but more and more musicians are getting sober. Over a year and a half after his health scare, Montana is proud to show people that there are other options: “People see me growing and it’s a beautiful thing,” he says. “I feel like the growth, and people just seeing my elevation, the ups, the downs and seeing that we’re still here doing it and looking better than yesterday.”[3]
Montana really is doing well, and enjoying sobriety. As he put it: “Now sober is becoming my new high.”[4]
