Since the first World Mental Health Day in 1995, initiated by the World Federation for Mental Health, the event has been commemorated every year on October 10. The overarching objective of this global day of awareness is to increase knowledge and understanding of mental health issues and mobilize efforts to support mental health in every country across the planet.
At TruHealing Centers, World Mental Health Day is seen as an opportunity to highlight the work of mental healthcare providers and break through the stigma that keeps people from talking about mental health or seeking help in a mental health treatment program. If you or someone you love has a mental health concern, with or without a co-occurring addiction, TruHealing Centers can help. The History of World Mental Health Day
The day was created to promote mental health activism and provide education to shatter stereotypes and misconceptions about mental health. Organizers used televised international meetings with participants from countries as far-flung as Australia, Egypt, the U.K., the U.S., and many more.
The founder of World Mental Health Day understood that many people with mental health challenges across the globe were struggling because mental health was often not recognized as a matter of health. In 1994, organizers determined that a specific theme would encourage a more organized and focused effort. The first theme was “Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services Throughout the World.”
Governments and nonprofits worldwide became engaged in producing and promoting programs focused on every aspect of mental health care. This year, on October 10, 2021, the theme is “Mental Health in an Unequal World.” It will highlight the fact that access to mental health care remains inconsistent, with over 75% of people worldwide who have a mental health disorder unable to access care.
The Benefits of Mental Health Treatment
Having a diagnosable mental health disorder is not necessary to benefit from mental health therapy. Life can be very challenging, and at times overwhelming. Relationship, career, financial, or spiritual challenges can make it difficult to function. Whether or not you have a history of depression does not mean you can’t experience depression. Anxiety may not be a chronic problem, but at certain times in life, it can rear its head and paralyze you. Whatever your particular situation, professional mental health treatment can help:
- Improve self-esteem, self-awareness, self-reflection, and self-acceptance
- Develop coping strategies for triggering, challenging, or stressful situations
- Shift self-defeating attitudes and beliefs
- Change behaviors that do not serve you
- Learn self-regulation
- Manage and express emotions more productively
